2010 New Year Resolutions

I’ve read a lot of articles over the past few weeks (which I now can’t find and didn’t bookmark and history is really not helping) that have rubbished the idea of the New Year Resolution, saying that you should just strive to be a better person, change your lifestyle, change your outlook… I’m going to conveniently ignore the fact that it all amounts to the same thing and concede that perhaps they have a point. If we take a look back on last year’s post on the same topic we’ll see an amazing 0% success rate. That’s right, I made four promises to myself and have managed to complete zero of them to any degree of satisfaction. That’s quite an achievement! Read more …

Why I’m Not Voting Today

It’s Thursday 4th June. I know that there are elections going on today, but up until this afternoon I just thought it was for electing our MEPs. But it also turns out there’s local council elections taking place too. I probably should have figured that out from the leaflets I’ve had through my door, but… well whatever.

Currently working on a redesign

Man! It has been a while since I wrote anything in here guys! I’m not so good at this blogging business huh? Maybe giving the site a new lease of life will kick things up a notch.

THAT’S RIGHT! I’m currently working on a new design for this thing. It’s been a good few years since I made this site, my skills have improved, my knowledge has improved, the Internets have improved and quite frankly this site is ass.

Yesterday (Bank Holidays yeah!) I spent most of the day sitting around watching some TV shows, but the time I didn’t spend doing that I spent checking out the best of the best blogs on the web. Most were web design oriented, some were personal blogs, and a few were from other industries, but they were all pretty sexy to my eyes.

After hundreds of sites bookmarked and two sheets of notes and sketches made I’ve got a pretty awesome idea of how I want the refreshed site to look. The hard part is getting the pretty out of my head and onto the screen. I am almost definitely a developer/coder more than I am a designer, so it’s gonna take some time and a lot of revisions before I get the final design anywhere near what I want. But we’ll get there!

There’s two major changes that are going to be made, the massive design overhaul aside. First and foremost will be the switch over to WordPress from b2evolution. I use WordPress quite a bit at work so I get to play around with it a fair amount, and it’s just so awesome. It’s also used more widely than b2evo, so the community support seems to be deeper too.

he second major change will be losing the Binary Loves You Too theme. I love geeky references and all that jazz, but for this site to work how I want the theme of the site has to match the domain. Ditching this domain would be far too much hassle, so the BLYT tag gets binned instead! Maybe in future I’ll resurrect it for something else and give it its won domain, but for now – bye bye binary!

I’M EXCITED GUYS!

Why Canada isn’t a super power

I mentioned yesterday that we in England in currently experiencing the worst snow we’ve had in 6 years. It’s affecting us quite severely. Let me paint you a text based picture of the mayhem:

  • There are no Southeastern (amongst other network) trains running into London at all.
  • Sections of motorways and major A-roads are closed because of snow and snow based accidents.
  • Countless schools are closed.

I’m sure this has negative effects on our economy in some pretty severe ways. Major sections of our capital’s workforce just can’t get into work, and those who work in more remote areas (hello me!) are quite simply boned.

I’m not trying to suggest that our country is a little bit on the useless side, but let’s take a look at Canada. They have some fucking crazy weather over there. To save you the trouble of clicking here is the vital information. Most of the country has snowdepth of over 30cm with approximately half the country having snow depth of over 50cm. That’s a whole half of a metre people! And those numbers are averages, which means at times there was probably deeper snow.

So what’s it like in England right now you ask? Barely 10cm in most places by the sounds of it.

This is just one day. Canada deals with this shit for months.

A look forward to 2009

The beginning of a new year means resolutions and a look forward at what we expect to achieve in the new year, and as today is the first day of the new year … oh, wait. Whoopsy, I’m a month late. That’s no suprise! As I mentioned in my look back at 2008 post, I’m no stranger to procastination. I’m only a month late though, and we’re currently experienceing some of our worst weather in 6 years, so it might as well still be December or January.
