A look back on 2008

It’s now been 2009 for over a week and I’m finally writing my recount of 2008, after a month of “Ooh, must write that blog post” thoughts. Yes, I’m pretty good at putting things off. That will no doubt be reflected in my ramblings below.

Anyways, 2008 was a pretty friggin’ awesome year for me. Some exciting things happened in my personal life (exciting to me anyway…) and in my professional life. Live is looking good right about now! Details for why to be found after the jump…

‘To Do: Finish Any Game’

An interesting post was made on Kotaku yesterday about an article over at the Escapist. Tom Endo takes a look at game culture and reasons for not finishing games. He talks about not being embarrassed to say he’s played a game but not finished it. This made me think. Am I embarrassed to have not finished the games I’ve got? I’m not so sure. It bothers me that I have such a long list of games that are unfinished, or even unstarted. And trust me, I do have a lot.

PlayStation Home Beta Access

Usual routine this morning – wake up, turn on computer, load up emails, select and delete the 95% that are rubbish. Read the remaining 5% and hope for something interesting. Today that 5% held my PlayStation Home Beta Access Key. Yey!

I’ve spent a lot of time in the Home world today, and even with the very limited content it’s really impressive. Customisable avatars, customisable living spaces, customisable clubhouses and a number of social areas to mingle in really make the experience interesting. There’s quite a bit lacking in the world at the moment, but that’s sure to change with time. But as a beta it’s pretty shiny. The scope for annoying everyone else with body popping dancing and unneccessary waving gestures is unending. I will have a lot of fun with that.

There was one moment of minor lulz when the big screen in Home Square started showing game ads. Big music and big explosions heralded an ad for Wipeout HD, in what is probably the worst quality video to have played through my HDTV since I’ve had it.

John Robinson Disambiguation

I make a habit of checking my various Google stats quite frequently to see if anyone interesting is linking to me, or to see if I’m making any kind of impact on the Internet. At all. Generally it’s pretty boring reading. Most links to this site come from posts I’ve made elsewhere.

Not all of them though! Today I saw I was being linked to from a URL I didn’t recognise. I’m being linked to from the John Robinson disambiguation page! It’s simply a list of a number of John Robinson’s that exist around the world, compiled by another of my my name brothers.

I’m not in bad company! There’s a number of professors, authors, CEOs and at least one murderer. You want to watch out world. We’re coming for you, and we don’t mess about!

There’s not much exciting going on with the page, but it fills me with a weird sense of accomplishment. I think… I think this is what fame feels like?
